How to start a conversation about home care
A practical guide to discussing home care with a loved one: listen to their preferences, identify daily tasks and prepare questions for a consultation.
Begin with their priorities
Choose an unhurried time and ask what makes a good day. Which routines does your loved one enjoy? Which tasks feel tiring or difficult? Listen before suggesting a schedule or deciding which kind of help is needed.
Talk about specific tasks
“Would some help getting ready in the morning be useful?” is easier to discuss than a broad statement that someone needs care. Separate the tasks they want to do independently from those where assistance would be welcome.
Keep the first step small
You do not have to settle everything in one conversation. Write down questions together and consider a free consultation as an opportunity to learn about options. Ask what would make your loved one comfortable with that first discussion.
Prepare for the consultation
Have the town or ZIP code, a preferred schedule and a list of everyday tasks ready. Ask about rates, availability, caregiver arrangements and how changes would be handled. A consultation request is not a commitment to begin services.
